FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

when does a colorado permit expire?

Most Colorado permits are good for 3 years.

How long must I hold my permit?

If you are under the age of 18, you must hold the permit for a minimum of 1 year or until you turn 18.

If you are under the age of 16 1/2, you must also prove that you have had 6 hours of Behind the Wheel Instruction with an approved Driving School.

How many hours do i have to track?

If you are under the age of 18, you must provide a 50 hour drive log. At least 10 of those hours must be night driving. The only person that can sign for your drive time is the person who signed the affidavit at the DMV when you received your permit.
Remember, 50 hours is the MINIMUM amount of hours that you must log. This doesn't mean that you should stop driving once you reach 50 hours. Keep practicing.

When can i take the 30 hour class?

The 30 hour classroom can be taken once you are 14 1/2 years old. We recommend waiting to take the class until you are within 1-2 months of your 15th birthday. You are eligible to take the written test once you are within 30 days of turning 15. The class is only good for 6 months. Most students attend class about 1-3 months before their 15th birthday. This way, they have time to schedule their DMV appointment for around their birthday.

Am I too old to attend class or to take driving lessons?

Absolutely not! Not everyone is ready to drive at the same time. We have had students as old as 74 in class.

can i take the drive test in my personal vehicle?

Yes.

We prefer to do drive testing in our vehicles but you may test in your private vehicle.
You will need to show current proof of insurance and current registration for the vehicle. We also will complete an inspection of the vehicle before the drive. All brake lights and turn signals must work, the front doors must open and close from inside and outside the vehicle, the front windows must go up and down, the car must have a license plate on the front and back (if Colorado plates) and the windshield can not be shattered.

If you have a restricted permit, you are required to test in a vehicle equipped with an interlock device. We do not provide this vehicle.
